Bulletin #45 Gaudate et Exsultate

Bulletin #45 Gaudate et Exsultate

June 2018

Dear friends,

On March 19, Pope Francis once again surprised us with a magnificent document: the apostolic exhortation Gaudete et exsultate, with which he made an appeal to holiness in the contemporary world. Holiness is as diverse as humanity and is "next door". It is practiced by ordinary people who day by day increase their commitment to love, especially with the most vulnerable people. Nobody is saved in isolation but God attracts us taking into account the complex human relationships: He wanted to enter a particular dynamic, in the dynamics of a people.

Total world military spending reached 1,739 billion dollars in 2017, with an increase of 1.1% in real terms compared to 2016, according to the new figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI This expenditure represents 2.2% of world GDP and, in more illustrative terms, means that humanity spends $ 230 per person per year on arms. Our country is still totally refractory to the signing and ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It is urgent to continue to be involved in all the initiatives of disarmament, control of arms trade and education for Peace, because [...] "a true and constant international peace cannot rest on the balance of military forces, but only on reciprocal confidence. "

From June 6 to 8 the meeting of the Executive Committee of Justice and Peace of Europe was held in Brussels. On June 6, the first Laudato Si Reflection Day took place with a theme on sustainable finance in Europe and in the Church. The days to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the General Justice and Peace Commission promote integral ecology and, both in Palencia and in Barcelona, they not only analyze it and carry out concrete proposals, but also carry out joint acts of environmental care .

On the back cover we describe activities in which the General Committee participated from March to June. Some of them have been carried out together with Church organizations in the Enlázate for Justice and Church for Decent Work initiatives. Others have been developed with civil society in the NGO Coordinator for Development and in advocacy with other entities and the previous Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness to address the follow-up of the EU Regulation on due diligence in the chains of mineral supply.

We hope you can join us in Barcelona at the Justice and Peace in Europe Seminar, from September 28 to 30. Registration can be made until July 20 at the place indicated on the web where the form is also located. Happy summer! We are waiting for you!

Best regards,

Isabel Cuenca Anaya
