Adressing the serious situation facing Iran
Spanish Commission for Justice and Peace expresses its deep concern about the escalation of social, economic and geopolitical tensions that threaten life, stability and peace in the region. The mobilisation of large sectors of the population reflects a significant deterioration in living conditions, marked by inflation, currency devaluation, drought, the energy crisis and the cumulative impact of harsh international sanctions. These protests, which began peacefully, have led to episodes of violence that have caused casualties and growing polarisation.
We condemn all forms of violence, both against peaceful demonstrators and acts of vandalism and crime that endanger the civilian population. At the same time, we warn of the difficulty of verifying information in a highly polarised context, where manipulation of information and restrictions on communication prevent an objective and accurate assessment of the facts.
We recall that the current situation cannot be understood without its historical background, marked by decades of external interference, coups d'état, authoritarianism and sanctions that have seriously damaged the country's sovereignty, development and social cohesion. We reject any military intervention that would exacerbate the suffering of the population and increase the risk of a regional conflict with unpredictable consequences.
We echo the call made by Pope Leo XIV, who on 11 January 2026 urged the international community to 'patiently cultivate dialogue and peace', stressing that only through diplomacy, listening and the sincere pursuit of the common good is it possible to overcome violence and the logic of confrontation.
We defend respect for the sovereignty of States and maintain that internal problems must be resolved through their own processes, with honest and conciliatory mediation. We reaffirm our commitment to defending the lives and human rights of all people, especially those who suffer most from repression, poverty and violence. Finally, we urge multilateral institutions to abandon their indifference and actively engage in promoting dialogue and effective agreements in favour of peace.
