Pope Francis’s Easter
This morning we were struck by the sad news of the passing of our Pope Francis. Just when we thought his health was improving, Francis returned to the Father's house. He left us his life's testimony, with an educational, peaceful, and liberating charisma. He embodied the Gospel in fidelity to Jesus' message. A "precious life," according to the adjectives he used, dedicated until the end of his days.
The General Commission for Justice and Peace takes into account the current situation of the Church and prays that the Lord will embrace the meaning of Pope Francis's work. We deeply appreciate his life and his courageous efforts in communication and conciliation. We mourn this loss and hope that his seed will bear fruit in these moments of crisis in history at all levels. We pray for him, as he always prayed, and for the Church that his great pastoral work may continue.
We echo one of his last wishes:
"I would like us to renew our hope that peace is possible! From the Holy Sepulchre, the Church of the Resurrection, where this year Easter is being celebrated by Catholics and Orthodox on the same day, may the light of peace radiate throughout the Holy Land and the entire world.'' ("Urbi et Orbi" Message, Easter 2025).
In you, the Gospel has reached out to believers and nonbelievers alike. The margins and peripheries have been better served. You have placed the poorest people, peace, and environmental care at the center of the Church.
You have chosen a significant day to take the step toward eternal life. We are sure that God, the Good Father, has already given you a big hug. Happy Easter, dearest Francis!
